<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - I met someone a while back who profoundly changed how I think about life. In 2018, I posted a photo of my TV with The Lion King playing, saying it was my first viewing because I grew up in a right-wing conservative cult, which is pretty weird, admittedly. A complete stranger named C.J. kindly commented, saying he hoped I enjoyed it and he knew there was a story there. (Understatement of the century, but no, I’m not going to tell that story here.) We chatted a few times, I found out he had written a book, and I even interviewed him on Good Humans. His name is C.J. Casciotta, and he wrote a book called Get Weird. In his book, C.J. writes: “Your weirdness is your worth. It’s the value you bring to this universe simply by breathing air with a set of lungs no one else has ever used before. You can’t do anything to become weird, you must only acknowledge that you are weird, even when you don’t feel like it - or when you would simply prefer to float gently in a giant sea of Same.”</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - I mentioned Baby Steps in my Game of the Year Write-Up, but it deserves a mention here, too. Baby Steps has a message that I think is important: asking for or needing help is not an admission of failure or a lack of ability; it’s just being human. This message is wrapped in such a thick layer of weird, though, that it is impossible to ignore, making the intensely vulnerable message more palatable and providing much-needed comic relief in contrast to the hard truths being confronted. From finding all manner of hats to meeting donkey men with an aversion to wearing pants to the controls themselves being bonkers, this game promises one of the weirdest video game experiences you’ve ever had, for better or worse.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Take the tape off of your webcam. Before Your Eyes uses your real-life blinks to progress the story, making this one of the most innovative ways to interact with a game that I have ever seen. The game itself tells the story about a journey through the afterlife, wherein a mysterious ferryman tells you he needs to learn the story of your life before he takes you to your final destination. Emotional and engaging, this game’s blinking controls make it even more immersive and impactful by highlighting the fleeting nature of moments.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - In Bugsnax, you are invited to Snaktooth Island by your friend Lizbert, but when you arrive, she is missing, and mysteries abound. You then set out to find your friend and, in doing so, become acquainted with the island’s inhabitants and their… idiosyncrasies… along the way. Bugsnax, the insect-like fauna that inhabit the island, resemble familiar foods and are apparently the tastiest things anyone has ever encountered. Every islander you meet is desperate for the bugsnax, often to feverish, manic degrees, but eating them has consequences.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - What do you get when you mix Stardew Valley, Hades, and a dash of horror? You get a cozy little cult-builder sim with adorable animals to be recruited, blessed, punished, sacrificed, and/or married, depending on the whims of the cult leader, you. Cult of the Lamb features, you guessed it, a lamb who is saved from certain death by a mysterious figure and builds a cult in gratitude. Oh, and the lamb is possessed. In one section of this game, you can recruit followers and give them jobs, build a church and give sermons, bestow blessings on your followers to make them more productive, and punish dissenters to ensure compliance, all in service of building a thriving community. The other part of this game is venturing out into the harsh, wild world to annihilate the false prophets and gather resources for your cult. There is a lot going on here, and all of it is bizarre and cozy and strange and disturbing and fun.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - The first thing I’ll say about Doki Doki Literature Club is DON’T JUDGE A BOOK (or game) BY ITS COVER. I can’t say much about this game without spoiling it, so I’ll just say that if you like weird games with choice-based narratives, this is for you. If you are a child or are “easily disturbed”, as the game’s description says, this game is NOT for you.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Remember that movie, Cowboys and Aliens? No? You’re not alone, but you are wrong. It’s awesome. Evil West is like that, but with vampires and a lightning gauntlet. This game reimagines the Old West in a steampunk setting with the looming threat of vampire hordes wreaking death and destruction throughout the American frontier. As part of a top-secret vampire-hunting organization, you are tasked with rooting out the vampire menace and ridding the West of their evil once and for all. With gadgets, guns, and grit as your weapons against the vampires, this game is nonstop brutal action and explosive visuals reminiscent of 80’s action movies.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Forgive Me Father is a FPS (first-person shooter) set in a very Lovecraftian world where your character is white-knuckling their sanity while trying to fight back the eldritch horrors threatening humankind. Along with a “madness meter”, the game’s unique design features hideous monsters, disturbing NPCs, and guns that range from something Van Helsing would carry to organic, alien objects that may or may not be living things. The gameplay is frenetic, the visuals are striking, and the story is dread-inducing. Fans of cosmic horror will probably find a lot to love here.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - The Forgotten City is a game about an ancient Roman city stuck in a time loop. You, the player, happen upon this city and are tasked with poking around to discover just what is going on here and how or if it can be changed. There are a few different endings, lots of characters to talk to, decisions to make, and loops to live through. Your detective skills will be tested, as will your sense of morality and ethics. “The many shall suffer for the sins of the one…” Unless you can change that.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Obvious crudeness aside, this game is surprising in a few different ways. It presents itself as an irreverent, physics-based oddity, existing just for the LOLs. Spend some time with it, though, and there’s some genuine warmth and heart buried under all those jiggling schlongs. Genital Jousting is mostly just a jokey, funny little game, but there is a touching (I know, the innuendo is IMPOSSIBLE to avoid here), earnest story about what it means to accept and love yourself while simultaneously striving to be the best version of yourself. Not necessarily a game you want someone walking in on with no context, but it is strangely wholesome and profound. Yes, I just called a game about a sentient penis wholesome and profound. I TOLD YOU I WAS WEIRD.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - In Her Story, you are tasked with sifting through FMV footage of 7 police interviews with a woman in an attempt to piece together the truth about her missing husband. In the game, the interface resembles a mid-90’s computer database with limited keyword search capabilities, through which you view these interviews and gather clues. The acting is top-notch and the gameplay is free-form without being aimless, making this game weird enough to be memorable without making it so strange that it is difficult to engage with on its own terms.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Inscryption, much like Doki Doki Literature Club, is better experienced than described. What starts as a kind of creepy deck-building card game with a mysterious opponent turns into… something else altogether. Twists and turns abound here, all of them completely unpredictable and each more bizarre than the last. This game is genuinely creepy. You should play it.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - In the small town of Gallows Creek, one man stands between the townsfolk and a serial killer on a spree: late-night DJ Forrest Nash. Killer Frequency throws you into the action as a DJ on the graveyard shift answering calls that probably should be going to the police, except the chief is dead and anyone could be next. Solve puzzles, find clues, and talk callers through their crises to help the town make it through the night. Equal parts horror and comedy, Killer Frequency features a pretty detailed 80’s era radio station, complete with switches, cassette and record players, and, of course, a phone. Don’t touch that dial, it’s traffic and terror on the 2’s here on 189.16, The Scream!</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - In The Operator, you are the person in the chair, quarterbacking field agents via a 1990s computer interface. You’ll chat with, take calls from, and analyze files for field agents, assisting them in unraveling clues for various investigations. As you might have guessed, things eventually seem to be amiss, and something more sinister seems to be afoot. Embark on some extracurricular investigation, do some hacking, and get to the bottom of things before you get disavowed. Or worse…</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Scanner Sombre renders the world around you in rainbow-colored pinpoints of light, but only where you scan. In this game, you’ll explore a vast cave system, scanning your surroundings to navigate, revealing gaping chasms, subterranean lakes, and… other things. Over the course of a relatively short narrative, you’ll discover things long forgotten and perhaps better left buried deep below the surface. The visual style is striking and deftly elevates the feeling of claustrophobia and dread that sets in the longer you play.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Combining puzzle-solving elements with FPS gameplay is a risky move, but Superhot pulls it off. The core mechanic of this game is that time only moves when you do. You’ll feel like a murder god as you rampage your way through levels, using whatever weapons you come across. The time mechanic allows you to carefully plan your next move and then execute with precision, which is exactly what you’ll need to do to survive the overwhelming odds stacked against you. Superhot gives the FPS genre a much-needed refresh and does so with style.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Superliminal is TRIPPY. Like Alice in Wonderland on mushrooms soaked in LSD and laced with DMT trippy. And it’s amazing. In Superliminal, your alarm wakes you at 3 AM, and you venture out of your room into what you quickly realize is a surreal dreamscape. You are at the Pierce Institute, a patient of the famed Dr. Pierce, undergoing treatment via his state-of-the-art SomnaSculpt therapy. Dr. Pierce, by way of cassette players you find throughout the levels, tells you to try and see things from a different perspective in order to make progress. The game plays with perception and dream logic in ways that will bend your brain and keep you saying “What? OH, NO WAY!” over and over again.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - The controls in this game allow you to walk around, jump (in some cases), and slap things. Yes, I said slap things. Want to talk to someone? Walk up and slap them. Want to pick up an item? Give it a slap. Want to open a door? Yeah, that’s gonna be a slaparooney.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - 20 weird games you should play - Don’t misunderstand me, TTRPGs do have rules. Depending on the system and the group, you may find yourself creating a character in a futuristic cyberpunk city or a high-fantasy medieval kingdom, or a gritty seafaring town or… you get the point. But the universal aspect of all of these games is that YOU create YOUR character, which is something only YOU can do. Bringing this list full-circle, the specific flavor of weird you possess is the thing only you can imbue upon your character. Yes, again, there are rules, but your decisions, your character’s personality, your actions are YOURS, and that creative freedom is the thing I love the most about these games. I love getting to try out new, wacky ideas for characters and become entirely different people as I immerse myself in the game’s setting. Often, I have the most fun sort of “finding” the character as I go along, letting my improv instincts and the circumstances form the character instead of going into a game with a rigid idea of who my character is. But maybe you’d be more comfortable forming those ideas more rigidly ahead of time, and that’s ok! The fun of these games is becoming a character and collaborating with friends to tell a wild, unique story together.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - Josh’s top 5 games of 2025 - In the wake of COVID (yes, that’s still a factor) and amidst the emergence of ubiquitous “AI” (I won’t be ranting about that here, don’t worry), the video games industry has been running leaner as layoffs and union-busting became the go-to fixes for over-borrowing, inflation, and automation efforts. This was a weird, arguably bad year for the industry. Brilliant creators and studios found themselves suddenly jobless (some after having made universally beloved games like HI-FI Rush) while others merely had long-term projects canceled. Meanwhile, shareholders were giddy to see an approximately 7.5% increase in revenues, totalling around $197 billion. That’s where the first paragraph comes in.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - Josh’s top 5 games of 2025 - In Avowed, you are an Envoy, which is basically a magical supercop sent by the Emperor to investigate the Dreamscourge. If the idea of being a cop puts you off, good news: you can make choices and discoveries that change that pretty quickly. You are also god-touched, which just means you have some cool magic and your character looks like one of Davy Jones’ crew in Pirates of the Caribbean, except replace coral and barnacles with lichens and tree bark. You get to wield swords, pistols, and magic, sometimes all at once, and the combat is kinetic and fluid. The characters you meet, some of whom join your party, are interesting and generally have backstories worth hearing.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - Josh’s top 5 games of 2025 - At first blush, another game about delivering packages might not seem appealing, especially since Death Stranding already explored this extensively. Death Stranding 2 unapologetically continues that gameplay, but adds a multitude of quality-of-life features that vastly improve the experience. I’m being cheeky saying these games are about delivering packages, though. Death Stranding 2, like the first game, continues exploring the ideas of connection and the role of society, while also diving into themes of grief, purpose, the price of survival, and loss. While the trappings are weird and at times zany, the messaging is well done, if sometimes less than subtle.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - Josh’s top 5 games of 2025 - While the game may not be about delivering packages, there’s no denying that the core of the gameplay is. Sam starts off making his deliveries on foot, just like the first game, with the help of some tools like climbing gear and ladders. As he connects delivery points to the network, Sam meets some colorful characters who serve to both fill out the world and to provide Sam with tech upgrades that improve his survival odds and delivery efficiency. Among my favorites are The Pizza Chef, The Architect, and The Lone Commander, all of whom are interesting and give excellent rewards for increasing their connection level.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - Josh’s top 5 games of 2025 - Combat is a much more prevalent aspect of the gameplay this time around, and the variety of weapons offers just as deep a rabbit hole of customization as the delivery gameplay. Want to be a long-range specialist? There are weapons for that. Want to get up close and personal? You can slap people unconscious with rubber pizzas, among other things. Want to go guns blazing? Yeah, lots of options there. Unsurprisingly, the combat feels Metal Gear-esque (Hideo Kojima also wrote and directed the Metal Gear games), which means it is tactical and focused on using the right equipment for the right situations.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Ok, now why should you care?</image:title>
<image:caption>You might assume from the definition of “indie” that these developers have less resources and more limitations on what they can make as a result. You’d be correct. However, the freedom that inherently accompanies a lack of obligation to large corporate structures allows these developers to do interesting and new things with their games, often leading to wholly unique experiences that mainstream developers could never achieve because of the scale of risk.</image:caption>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Designed by Yoshio Kiya and published by Nihon Falcom, Xanadu was a sequel to a game called Dragon Slayer, but the resemblance began and ended at the series relation. Xanadu, with its groundbreaking karma system, individually leveling weapons, and intricate quest systems, became extremely and unexpectedly popular and was one of the best-selling Japanese PC games of all time, paving the way for Metroid, Castlevania, and the entire Metroidvania genre.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - BG3 is their first game set in the D&D universe, specifically in The Forgotten Realms setting. Translating the complex and intricate rules of D&D to a video game in a way that newcomers and seasoned players alike can enjoy is hard enough, but capturing the epic, adrenaline-charged, scary, and downright goofy tone of D&D is maybe even harder. Larian absolutely nailed all of it. BG3 can have you furiously defending helpless refugees from a vindictive druid one moment and inadvertently catching a troll and bugbear having… an intimate moment… the next. This range of experience and tone is typical of a D&D game, but nearly impossible to translate effectively into a video game without giving your player narrative whiplash. Baldur’s Gate 3 threads that needle perfectly while also keeping the stakes high and providing dozens if not hundreds of hours of entertainment. No two playthroughs are alike. Or four and planning a fifth, if you’re like me. I love this game and if you enjoy epic fantasy with goofy humor and some delicious stat point goodness in the mix, I think you will too.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Right away, Blue Prince’s premise is unique enough to at least make you look again to make sure you didn’t misread it. You have inherited a house from an eccentric and wealthy family member and decide to explore it. This isn’t as straightforward as it sounds though, because of the particular quirk of this estate: its layout changes every day. As you explore, you also learn that there is quite a bit more going on than just inheriting a strange magical house. There are math puzzles, logic puzzles, cryptic notes, and vibes.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Don’t be fooled though, the 1930’s animation style absolutely does not mean the gameplay is sluggish or easy. Each level contains a very short introductory zone that is mainly focused on leading you to a boss battle that requires lighting reflexes and dogged determination. To say Cuphead is hard and unforgiving would be vastly understating the maddening experience of beating your head against boss attack patterns, parry windows, and dodge timing as you try to do enough damage to the boss with your finger guns to kill it.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Oxenfree is relatively gameplay light, favoring vibes and atmosphere over lots of interactivity, but there is gameplay. As mentioned, you can make dialogue choices that affect the story in various ways. Exploring the island, finding objects, and, strangely enough, tuning a portable radio are some other ways you progress the story, although Oxenfree is mostly uninterested in progression and prefers to let you exist and poke around the world in your own time.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - You awake, eyes adjusting slowly to the vast night sky as a lone comet blazes overhead. As you slowly rise, you realize you are not alone. You sit up on what you realize is a sleeping bag next to a crackling campfire and turn to see someone roasting marshmallows. By talking with your campfire companion, you learn that you are an astronaut and today is your launch day. So begins a game that is heartbreaking, terrifying, and riveting all at once. It’s difficult to talk about this game at all without spoiling it and it’s just more enjoyable going in blind anyway. The exhilaration of discovery is in large part what makes this game so great. Suffice it to say that Outer Wilds is a haunting puzzle game that will make you feel deeply about a lot of things.</image:title>

<image:title>ARTICLES - How Indie Games are Saving the Industry (and Some Awesome Games I Recommend) - Where Stardew Valley really shines though is in the inhabitants of Pelican Town, the community neighboring your farm. Each character is lovingly written and has their individual charm, even the more surly residents. A shy and awkward blacksmith, an absent-minded scientist, a jovial tavern keeper, sisters that are as different from one another as conceivably possible, and a literal wizard are just a few of the folks you’ll meet along the way, each with their own stories and routines. You can befriend each villager and a few are even eligible to date and marry. The evolution of your friendship and conversations with each villager as you get to know them reveals deeply touching stories and relationships, exploring themes like PTSD, alcoholism, poverty, depression, acceptance, and even bigotry and racism. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t had to wipe tears from my eyes as I got to know these characters during my time in Stardew Valley.</image:title>

<image:caption>At the end of world 3-1 there is a staircase leading to the flagpole that signals the end of the level. This time, between Mario and the safety of the flagpole were two koopas doing their koopa walk down the stairs. This complicated things, but my sister confidently ignored the first one, leaving it un-stomped and jumped over it to land on the step above. The second koopa continued its approach stair by stair, but Mario was now standing perfectly still, about to be koopa’d any second. Thinking she was distracted, I tried to warn my sister of Mario’s imminent doom. Cool as a cucumber, she just held up a hand and said, “Watch. This.” That’s when the magic happened. She pressed a button and Mario jumped ever so slightly just as the koopa reached his step, barely clearing the koopa’s head and landing on the shell. This I had seen hundreds of times before, but then the shell bounced off the other side of the step and came back at Mario, who stomped it again, bouncing it off the step again, stomping it again, and on and on while the score kept multiplying for every stomp.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Animal Well is a puzzle game, to be reductive, but it’s really much more than that. The music, if it can be described as such, is haunting and eerie while somehow also feeling charming and cozy. The pixel art is singular in its style and absolutely stunning, rendering everything in a soft neon glow that gives all of it an otherworldly, dreamy sheen.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is hard to pick just one thing to love about this game. The graphics are phenomenal, boasting bright, colorful environments and crisp animation. The gameplay is some of the best platforming (a genre that, as the name implies, consists mainly of maneuvering your character around platforms within a level - think Mario - to get to the goal) I have experienced in some time, offering genuinely challenging sections as well as secrets that truly feel fun to find. The music is catchy, memorable, and atmospheric, setting the perfect tone in each level. Astro Bot’s character itself is a bit of a blank slate, which makes him the perfect little guy to dress up in PlayStation-themed outfits that are earned as you progress through the game.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Awful, horrible name aside, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is superb, against all odds. Nearly every choice in this game’s design stacked the odds heavily against it, which is why it’s so impressive the game is actually great. It’s first-person (meaning the game is played from a perspective mimicking the character’s point of view), which is a strange choice for a game that involves a not insignificant amount of whipping and punching, although it works surprisingly well. Instead of getting Harrison Ford for the performance capture, they got Troy Baker, who is an extremely talented performer in his own right (credits include Joel in The Last of Us and Higgs Monaghan in Death Stranding), and Troy somehow captures Harrison Ford’s mannerisms and inflections so well that you’d never guess it wasn’t Ford. Without spoiling it, the game starts by letting you play an iconic scene from one of the movies and somehow makes that fun. The title is one of the most horrendous crimes against video games ever perpetrated and yet somehow it manages to lean so hard into the vibe that it comes all the way back around to being charming. There are so many strange choices that scream confidence and demand flawless delivery of the promises they make, but in almost every case, the developers absolutely pull it off.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Early in the game, Kay finds herself on a new planet in the Star Wars ethos called Toshara, where she and her trusty little companion Nix begin to learn more about the underworld of trouble she's in after a heist goes about as badly as a heist can go. The game is open-world, meaning it takes place in a large open area that is largely completely explorable right away. This allows the freedom to poke around every nook and cranny to your heart’s content, finding some fun and lovingly crafted little details along the way. Freedom of exploration is one of the stronger points of the gameplay, especially since the story eventually brings Kay to some familiar locations from the original trilogy as well as other new-to-Star-Wars locations, all of which are impressively designed and incredibly immersive.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In service of avoiding story spoilers, I will just say the story was so compelling that I had to force (pun only partially intended) myself to explore each of the 5 major locations instead of just blasting (that one was on purpose) through to the finish. The conclusion was satisfying, but I am happy I took my time getting there because the extra little lore bits I discovered added even more context to some of the threads that were tied up at the end.</image:caption>
